PGP Encryption
Encrypt and decrypt PGP messages online, generate OpenPGP key pairs and inspect key fingerprints. Powered by openpgp.js and running entirely in your browser - keys and messages never leave your device.
What is PGP encryption?
PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is public-key encryption standard used for secure email and file encryption. Each person has a public key to share and a private key to keep secret: messages encrypted with the public key can only be decrypted with the matching private key.
How do I use this PGP tool?
Open the Generate keys tab to create your own key pair, share the public key with your contacts, then use the Encrypt tab with a recipient public key to write them a secret message, and the Decrypt tab to read messages addressed to you.
Does this tool upload my keys or messages?
No. The whole implementation runs locally in your browser using openpgp.js. Keys, messages and passphrases never leave your device - you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
What key types can I generate?
Modern Curve25519 ECC keys (fast and compact, recommended) and RSA keys of 3072 or 4096 bits for maximum compatibility with older software. You can protect the private key with a passphrase.
Why should I add a passphrase to my private key?
A passphrase encrypts the private key file itself. If someone obtains your key file, they still cannot use it without the passphrase - essential protection for keys stored on shared or backed-up devices.
Can I sign messages as well as encrypt them?
Yes. On the Encrypt tab, enable signing and provide your private key: the recipient can verify the message really came from you and was not modified, in addition to being encrypted for their eyes only.
What is the fingerprint shown in the key info tab?
The fingerprint is a unique 40-character hash of a key. To verify you have the right key, compare fingerprints with your contact over a trusted channel such as a voice call.
Are messages generated here compatible with GnuPG and other tools?
Yes. The output is standard OpenPGP armored text (BEGIN PGP MESSAGE / PUBLIC KEY BLOCK), which works with GnuPG (gpg), ProtonMail, Thunderbird and all mainstream OpenPGP implementations.
How to Use PGP Encryption
This PGP tool runs openpgp.js entirely inside your browser: encrypt and decrypt messages, generate your own OpenPGP key pair and inspect key details. Keys, messages and passphrases never leave your device.
- Open the Generate keys tab, enter a name (and optionally an email), choose Curve25519 or RSA, add a passphrase and press Generate key pair.
- Download both keys: the public key is for sharing, the private key must be kept secret - with its passphrase it is the only way to read your messages.
- To send a secret message, open the Encrypt tab, paste the recipient's public key, write your text and press Encrypt. Optionally tick signing and add your own private key.
- To read a message addressed to you, open the Decrypt tab, paste your private key and passphrase, paste the PGP message and press Decrypt.
- Use the Key info tab to inspect any key: algorithm, key ID, fingerprint, creation date, expiry and user IDs.
Compare key fingerprints with your contact over a phone call or another trusted channel before relying on a public key for the first time.
