How does the word finder work?
You enter the letters you have, optionally with ? wildcards, and the tool searches a built-in dictionary of over 370,000 English words, returning every valid word that can be made from your letters.
What is a wildcard?
A wildcard, written as ?, stands in for any single letter. In games like Scrabble this works just like a blank tile - the tool counts how many wildcards you have and allows that many unknown letters.
What is the pattern field for?
The pattern field lets you fix positions, for example _a_t matches every five-letter word with an a in second place and a t in fourth place, like "chart" or "plant".
Which dictionary does it use?
It uses the public-domain dwyl english-words list of roughly 370,000 English words up to 15 letters. It is a broad general list, so always confirm unusual words against your game's official dictionary.
Can I use it for Scrabble, crosswords or Wordle?
Yes. It is popular for Scrabble-style unscrambling, crossword clues (use the pattern field for fixed positions) and Wordle help (set the length to 5 and use the pattern or contains filters for green and yellow hints).
Does searching send my letters to a server?
No. The dictionary is downloaded once into your browser and all searching runs locally in a web worker. Your queries never leave your device.
Why do I see at most 2000 results?
Very short or very loose queries can match tens of thousands of words. To keep the page fast, the display is capped at 2000 words grouped by length, even though more may exist.
Can I search in languages other than English?
The built-in dictionary is English-only. You can still type any letters and filter them, but results will only ever be English words.
How to Use Word Finder
This word finder searches a dictionary of over 370,000 English words entirely inside your browser. Enter the letters you have, use ? as a wildcard, and get every playable word grouped by length - nothing is sent to any server.
- Wait a moment while the dictionary loads into your browser (the progress bar shows the download).
- Type your available letters in the Letters box and use ? for any blank or unknown tile.
- Refine the search with the Starts with, Contains and Ends with filters, or set an exact word length.
- For fixed positions - like a crossword grid - use the Pattern field: _a_t matches every five-letter word with a in second and t in fourth place.
- Results appear instantly, grouped from longest to shortest. Click any word to open its definition on Wiktionary.
For Wordle, set the length to 5 and use the pattern field with green letters (e.g. _r_ze) plus the Contains filter for yellow ones.
