Zip / Unzip Online
Create ZIP archives and extract ZIP files online for free. Compress multiple files with adjustable compression level, right in your browser - no upload.
What is a ZIP file?
ZIP is the most widely used archive format. It bundles one or more files into a single compressed file using lossless compression (usually DEFLATE), so no data is lost when files are packed and unpacked.
How do I create a ZIP file online?
Open the Compress tab, add your files by clicking or dragging, enter an archive name, pick a compression level and press Create ZIP. Everything is packed locally and the archive downloads straight to your device.
How can I extract ZIP files without installing software?
Switch to the Extract tab and drop your .zip file. Every entry inside is listed with its size and type, and you can download individual files or all of them at once - no installation required.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your files never leave your device, which makes it safe to use even for confidential documents.
What compression level should I choose?
Level 6 is the recommended balance of speed and size. Level 9 produces the smallest archives but takes longer, while level 0 simply stores files without compression - ideal for photos and videos that are already compressed.
Is there a file size limit?
The total size of the files you add must stay under 500 MB. Because processing happens on your own device, available memory also matters when working with very large archives.
Can this tool open password-protected ZIP files?
No. Encrypted ZIP archives are detected automatically and cannot be extracted here. Remove the password with the original application first, then extract the archive with this tool.
Why should I compress files into a ZIP?
ZIP archives shrink documents for faster sharing, let you send many files as a single attachment, and reduce storage space and bandwidth when transferring or backing up data.
Does zipping make images and videos smaller?
Usually not by much. JPEG, PNG, MP4 and similar formats are already compressed, so zipping them barely helps. Use the Store level to package such media quickly without wasted time.
Why does my ZIP contain a folder with the same name?
Some operating systems wrap the selected files in a parent folder when archiving. The folder you see is part of the original archive structure and is preserved when you extract it.
How to Use Zip / Unzip Online
This tool bundles multiple files into a single ZIP archive and extracts existing ZIP files back into individual files. Both directions run entirely in your browser — your files are never uploaded to any server.
- Choose your direction with the two tabs at the top: Compress packs files into a new ZIP, Extract opens an existing one.
- To compress, click the drop zone or drag files onto it — add as many as you like, up to 500 MB in total. Each file appears in the list with its size, and the × button beside it removes it.
- Type a name into the ZIP file name box, pick a Compression level — Store only, Default, or Maximum — then press Create ZIP and the finished archive downloads automatically.
- To extract, switch to the Extract tab and drop a .zip file there. Every entry is listed with its size and type, folders first.
- Click the download icon next to any entry to save just that file, or press Download all to save everything at once. Password-protected ZIPs are not supported.
Photos and videos are already compressed, so choosing Maximum wastes time for almost no size gain — Store only is the smarter level for them. Keep text documents on Default or above.
