Braille Translator
Free online braille translator. Convert text to Unicode braille and back (UEB grade 1) with capitals, numbers and punctuation. Instant two-way conversion, copy in one click.
How does this braille translator work?
It converts text to Unicode braille cell by cell following UEB grade 1 (uncontracted): each letter maps to its six-dot cell, capitals are prefixed with the capital sign, numbers use the number sign with the letters a to j, and punctuation maps to standard cells.
What is the difference between grade 1 and grade 2 braille?
Grade 1 is uncontracted braille that spells every letter out, while grade 2 uses contractions and shorthand cells to save space. This tool uses grade 1, which is easier to learn and unambiguous to convert automatically.
How are capital letters written in braille?
A capital sign (dot 6, the cell ⠠) is placed immediately before the letter it affects. That is why HELO becomes ⠠⠓⠑⠇⠕ with one capital cell before the H.
How are numbers written in braille?
The number sign ⠼ precedes cells a through j, which then read as digits 1 through 9 and 0. For example, 365 is written ⠼⠉⠋⠑.
Can I convert braille back into text?
Yes. Use the Braille to Text tab, paste the braille cells, and the tool reads them back into letters, digits and punctuation, undoing the capital and number signs where possible.
What is Unicode braille?
It is the Unicode block from U+2800 to U+28FF that assigns a code point to every possible six-dot and eight-dot cell, so braille can be displayed and shared as plain text on any device.
Does it work with languages other than English?
The mapping covers the basic Latin alphabet shared by many languages. Accented letters and non-Latin scripts are not contracted and pass through unchanged.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to or stored on any server.
How to Use Braille Translator
This translator converts between plain text and Unicode braille using UEB grade 1 (uncontracted): each letter maps to its six-dot cell, the capital sign marks uppercase letters, the number sign turns a–j into digits 1–0, and punctuation maps to its standard cells. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
- Keep the Text → Braille tab open, then type or paste your sentence into the text field.
- Read the braille output below it — the counters show characters in and cells out, and the conversion updates as you type.
- Press Copy to place the braille on your clipboard for use in documents or label printers.
- Switch to the Braille → Text tab and paste braille cells to read them back as normal letters, digits and punctuation.
- Check the three explanation cards to learn how the alphabet, the capital sign ⠠ and the number sign ⠼ work.
Test the round trip: translate a sentence to braille, then paste it into the Braille → Text tab — you should get the original sentence back, capitals included.
