Hebrew Date Converter
Convert any date between the Gregorian and Hebrew (Jewish) calendars instantly, with localized Hebrew month names, weekday display, a today button and day stepping. Runs fully in your browser.
What is the Hebrew calendar?
The Hebrew calendar is the official calendar of Israel and the traditional calendar of Judaism. It is lunisolar: months follow the phases of the moon and last 29 or 30 days, while years stay in step with the solar seasons by adding an extra month seven times in every nineteen-year cycle.
How does this converter work?
It uses the Hebrew calendar data built into your browser through the standard JavaScript Intl interface. Pick a Gregorian date and the Hebrew equivalent appears at once, or choose a Hebrew day, month and year and the Gregorian date is found by locating the exact matching day. No server is involved.
How is the Hebrew year counted?
Hebrew years are counted from the traditional creation of the world. Hebrew year 5787 begins on 1 Tishri, which falls in September or October 2026, and runs until the autumn of 2027. The Hebrew year therefore straddles two Gregorian years.
What are Hebrew leap years?
Seven years in every nineteen-year cycle — years 3, 6, 8, 11, 14, 17 and 19 — receive an extra month. Regular years have twelve months and 353 to 355 days, while leap years insert Adar I before Adar II and last 383 to 385 days. This is what keeps holidays in their proper seasons.
Why does the Jewish day start at sunset?
In Jewish tradition a day runs from one sunset to the next, so a Hebrew date technically begins on the evening before the matching Gregorian date. This tool converts calendar dates only; it does not calculate sunset times, so for events after dark the Hebrew date of that evening applies.
Are the month names shown in my language?
Yes. The converter asks your browser for localized month names, so Tishri, Cheshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar, Nisan and the rest appear with their customary spelling and script for each interface language.
What can I use it for?
Common uses include checking a birthday in the Jewish calendar, planning a bar or bat mitzvah, finding a yahrzeit anniversary, preparing for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur or Passover, and reading genealogy documents or gravestones that carry Hebrew dates.
Is any data uploaded?
No. Every calculation happens locally inside your browser tab — no network requests, no cookies, no tracking — and the converter keeps working even when you are offline.
How to Use Hebrew Date Converter
This Hebrew date converter translates any date between the Gregorian calendar and the Hebrew (Jewish) calendar using the calendar data built into your browser — with month names localized into your language, weekday display, a today button and one-day stepping. Nothing is uploaded.
- Pick or type a Gregorian date in the left block — the equivalent Hebrew date with its weekday appears instantly on both sides.
- For the reverse direction, choose the Hebrew day, month and year in the right block and the matching Gregorian date shows below.
- The month menu lists every month of the selected Hebrew year with localized names — leap years automatically show 13 months including Adar I and Adar II.
- Use the −1 / +1 buttons to step a single day across month and year boundaries, for example around Rosh Hashanah.
- Press "Go to today" at any time to jump back to the current date in both calendars.
The Jewish day runs from sunset to sunset, so a Hebrew date begins the evening before its Gregorian match. This tool compares calendar dates only — evening events belong to the Hebrew date of that same night.
