What is markmap?
Markmap is an open-source library that transforms markdown documents into interactive mindmaps. Headings, lists, links and bold text become branches of a zoomable tree rendered with d3.js.
How do I create a mindmap from markdown?
Type markdown in the left editor: each heading becomes a main branch, list items become child nodes, and nesting depth controls the hierarchy. The mindmap updates automatically about 300 ms after you stop typing.
Which markdown elements become mindmap nodes?
Headings (# through ######), ordered and unordered lists, blockquotes and task list items are converted into the tree structure. Bold, italic, inline code and links are preserved as node text.
Is my markdown uploaded anywhere?
No. The transformation runs entirely in your browser. Your notes never leave your device, so private outlines and brainstorming notes are safe.
What does the expand levels option do?
It controls how deep the mindmap is opened initially: all levels fully expanded, or only the first one, two or three levels visible. You can still click any node to expand or collapse its children.
How do I export the mindmap?
Click Download SVG to save the current tree as a vector file with embedded styles, ready to open in any browser or vector editor. The SVG scales without quality loss.
What happens if my markdown has errors?
Markdown is very forgiving, so real errors are rare. If the transformation throws an exception, the previous mindmap stays on screen and a toast explains what went wrong.
What happens when the editor is empty?
An empty state message appears over the canvas. As soon as you type any markdown content, the mindmap is generated again automatically.
Can I use tables or code blocks?
Markmap focuses on hierarchical structure, so tables and code blocks are not drawn as nodes. Keep your outline to headings, lists and text for the cleanest tree.
Does the mindmap follow dark mode?
Yes. The markmap colors are chosen to stay readable on both light and dark backgrounds, so the tree remains visible when the platform theme changes.
How to Use Markdown to Mindmap
Every heading and bullet in markdown can become a node in a mindmap. Type your outline on the left and this markmap-powered tool grows an interactive tree on the right, rendered entirely in your browser.
- Start from the sample outline in the Markdown box — top-level headings (#) become main branches, deeper headings (##, ###) add levels, and list items (-) become leaf nodes. Type or paste your own outline and the map rebuilds a moment after you pause.
- Control how deep the tree opens with the Expand levels dropdown — “All levels” shows everything, while 1–3 levels collapse the rest and keep large documents readable.
- Explore the map directly: drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and click a node to fold or unfold its branch.
- Press Fit view to frame the whole map in the panel again after panning or zooming around.
- Press Download SVG to save the mindmap as a scalable vector file, or Copy markdown to take the source text with you.
Keep each node to one short line — long sentences make branches collide. For big documents, set Expand levels to 2 and open only the branches you are working on.
