GIF Compressor
Compress animated GIFs online. Reduce width, cap the frame rate and re-quantize the palette with dithering. See before/after size and savings. All processing is local in your browser - no upload.
How does this GIF compressor work?
It rescales the GIF width, optionally lowers the frame rate and rebuilds an optimized color palette with FFmpeg's palettegen/paletteuse filters, then re-encodes the animation with tuned dithering.
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser via FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file stays on your device the whole time.
Which settings reduce size the most?
Reducing width has the biggest impact, followed by lowering the frame rate and cutting palette colors to 64 or 32. Combine them for the smallest files.
Will compression lower the quality?
Yes, slightly — fewer colors and lower frame rate mean less visual detail. The Smooth dithering option keeps gradients looking natural while shrinking the file.
Why is my compressed GIF not smaller?
Some GIFs are already highly optimized. If the output is bigger, use stronger settings: smaller width, lower frame rate cap or fewer palette colors.
Can I keep the original animation speed?
Yes, choose Keep original for the frame rate cap. Only the palette and optional scaling will change.
What is dithering and should I turn it off?
Dithering blends available colors to fake missing shades — great for photos and gradients. Turn it Off for flat cartoon-style graphics to gain extra compression and crisp edges.
Is there a size limit for the input GIF?
Files over 100 MB show a warning because browser memory is limited, but you can still try. Typical GIFs are far smaller.
Can I preview the result before downloading?
Yes. After compression you see the original and compressed animations side by side with their sizes, the absolute savings and the compression percentage.
Does compression add a watermark?
No. The tool is free, requires no sign-up and never alters your animation beyond the quality settings you choose.
How to Use GIF Compressor
Animated GIFs are often far heavier than they need to be. This compressor rescales the width, caps the frame rate and rebuilds an optimized color palette with FFmpeg entirely in your browser — your file is analyzed and re-encoded locally and never uploaded.
- Click the upload zone or drag a .gif file onto it. GIFs over 100 MB show a large-file badge.
- Choose a smaller output width, a frame rate cap (or Keep original), palette colors (256 down to 32), and a dithering mode.
- Press Compress GIF and watch the progress bar while FFmpeg rebuilds the palette and re-encodes the animation.
- Compare the original and compressed animations side by side, then press Download to save the smaller GIF.
Width is the strongest lever: dropping from original width to 480px typically cuts file size by more than half while remaining perfectly readable on chat apps.
