Noise Meter
Free online noise meter. Measure the sound level around you with your microphone: live gauge, min/max/average, history curve and reference scale. 100% local.
How does this noise meter work?
It captures audio from your microphone, computes the RMS level of the signal and converts it to an approximate decibel value shown on a live gauge, with min, max, average and a scrolling history curve.
Is the measurement accurate like a professional SPL meter?
No. Phone and laptop microphones are not calibrated instruments, so the values are relative approximations. For certified measurements, use a calibrated class 1 or class 2 sound level meter.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. The sound is analysed locally in your browser in real time. Nothing is recorded, stored or sent to any server.
Why do I have to allow microphone access?
The browser only exposes the microphone after you explicitly grant permission to the site. You can revoke this at any time in the site settings.
What decibel levels are considered safe?
Up to about 70 dB over a full day is generally safe for hearing. Prolonged exposure above 85 dB can cause damage, and levels above 120 dB can hurt immediately.
What do the reference scale colors mean?
The gauge goes from green (quiet, up to ~50 dB) through orange (normal environments, ~50-70 dB) to red (loud, above ~70 dB), helping you judge the environment at a glance.
Why does the value not reach 0 dB in a quiet room?
Microphone self-noise and room background are usually around 25-40 dB, and the tool clamps the display range between 20 and 130 dB.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, in mobile Chrome and Safari. Hold the device steadily and keep the microphone unobstructed; a case covering the mic can lower readings.
How to Use Noise Meter
This noise meter estimates the sound level around you entirely in your browser: your microphone signal is analysed locally to drive a live gauge, min/max/average readouts and a history curve. No audio is recorded or uploaded.
- Click "Start measuring" and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Read the live dB value on the gauge and watch the colored scale show how quiet or loud the environment is.
- Monitor Min, Max and Average below the gauge to capture peaks and the overall level over the session.
- Watch the scrolling curve to see how the level changes over the last minute or so.
- Press Stop when finished; nothing was ever recorded or sent anywhere.
For a stable reading place the device close to the sound source and keep the microphone unobstructed — readings are relative approximations, not certified measurements.
