What is BPM in music?
BPM stands for beats per minute — the number of steady pulses in one minute of music. A slow ballad sits around 60-90 BPM, pop usually 100-130, and dance music often 120-140.
How does this BPM detector work?
It analyzes onset patterns in the audio with the web-audio-beat-detector algorithm, entirely on your device. No file is uploaded; the tempo is computed locally in your browser.
Why does the result sometimes show half or double the BPM?
Tempo perception is relative: a 130 BPM track can be felt as 65 or 260. The tool offers the half-time and double-time alternatives so you can pick the tempo that matches how you count the beat.
Which audio formats can I analyze?
Anything your browser can decode — MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC and more. Only the first minute or so of audio influences detection, so long tracks analyze just as fast.
How accurate is the detection?
It is very reliable for beat-driven music: pop, rock, hip-hop, house and techno. Classical, ambient and rubato performances without a steady beat give less consistent results.
What is the metronome click overlay for?
Play your track and switch on the click: it ticks at the detected tempo on top of the music. If the clicks lock perfectly with the beat, the BPM is right.
Can I use it for DJ set planning?
Yes. Knowing precise BPM values makes it easy to plan beatmatched transitions. The half/double alternatives help when tracks sit between conventional DJ tempos.
Is my music uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your files never leave your device.
Why did detection fail on my file?
Very quiet recordings, long intros without percussion, or formats the browser cannot decode can fail. Try a louder section or a common format like MP3 or WAV.
How to Use BPM Detector

- Press Detect BPM. The first bars are decoded and analyzed right on your device — no upload happens.
- Read the tempo in the big display. Use the half / double chips to switch between plausible tempo readings if the track can be felt at different speeds.
- Press Metronome click and play the track: the click ticks at the displayed BPM on top of the music. If they lock together, the reading is correct.
If a 130 BPM dance track displays as 65, tap the double-time chip — DJs usually count house and techno in the 120-140 range.
