Chimp Test
Free online chimp test: memorize where the numbers sit, tap them in ascending order once they hide and climb from a 4×2 grid up to 8×6 with one extra number every round.
What is the chimp test?
It is a working-memory game inspired by the famous Ayumu experiments, in which young chimpanzees memorized number positions better than adult humans. In this web version you must capture the positions of numbers on a grid at a glance and reproduce them from memory.
How does one round work?
Numbers appear on their cells for about two seconds, then all tiles go blank. You must click the cells in ascending order, starting from 1, without seeing any of the numbers.
How does the difficulty increase?
Level 1 shows 4 numbers on a 4×2 grid. Every cleared level adds one more number and gradually enlarges the grid, up to 8×6 with as many numbers as you can handle.
What happens if I tap a wrong cell?
The cell flashes red and the run ends immediately. Your reached level becomes your score, and you can start a new run right away with the Play again button.
Is my score saved and shared?
Your best level is stored locally in your browser only — nothing is uploaded to any server and no account is needed. Clearing the site data erases the record.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The tiles are sized for fingers, taps register instantly and the layout adapts to small screens, so the game plays the same on a phone as with a mouse.
What is a good level to reach?
Most casual players land between levels 6 and 9. In the original research young chimps reliably solved nine numbers with only a fraction of a second of exposure, so every level above 8 is genuinely strong for a human.
How can I reach higher levels?
Widen your gaze instead of scanning digit by digit, group nearby numbers into shapes or routes, and start tapping instantly rather than double-checking. Practice raises your ceiling quickly because your brain learns to chunk positions.
How to Use Chimp Test
The chimp test is a working-memory game inspired by the Ayumu experiments, where young chimpanzees outperformed humans at memorizing number positions. Numbers appear on a grid for about two seconds, then the tiles go blank and you must tap them in ascending order purely from memory.
- Press Start — level 1 shows 4 numbers on a 4×2 grid.
- Study the positions while the numbers are visible; a countdown shows how long is left.
- When the tiles go blank, tap the cells in ascending order, starting from 1.
- Clearing a level adds one number and gradually grows the grid up to 8×6.
- A wrong tap flashes red and ends the run — your best level is saved in your browser and shown under Best level.
Widen your gaze instead of scanning digit by digit: take in the whole grid as one picture and group nearby numbers into shapes. Relax your hand before the hide — a fast first tap saves more runs than perfect recall of the last digits.
