Guitar Chords
Free online guitar chord library with 216 verified fingerings across all 12 keys: major, minor, 7, m7, maj7, sus2, sus4, dim and aug. Clear chord diagrams and instant strum playback.
How many chords are in this library?
216 fingerings covering all 12 roots from C to B in nine chord types: major, minor, dominant 7, minor 7, major 7, sus2, sus4, diminished and augmented. Every single fingering was verified against music theory so all sounding notes are true chord tones.
How do I read the chord diagram?
The vertical lines are the six strings (low E on the left), the horizontal lines are frets, X means the string is muted, O means it rings open, numbers in the dots are suggested left-hand fingers (1 = index to 4 = pinky) and the 3fr marker shows where the 5-fret window starts on the neck.
Why are there two fingerings for one chord?
Many chords can be played in more than one position — for example an open C and a barre C higher up the neck. Use the arrow buttons next to the fingering label to switch between them; both sound the same chord, but they have slightly different tones and are easier or harder depending on the song.
Where does the strum sound come from?
It is synthesized in real time with the Karplus-Strong algorithm, a physical model of a plucked string, using the WebAudio API in your browser. No audio samples are loaded and no sound files are downloaded — each string vibrates mathematically at its correct pitch.
What tuning do the diagrams assume?
Standard guitar tuning: E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 from the thickest to the thinnest string. If you use a capo or an alternative tuning, the shapes still work but the resulting chords will be different.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The layout is responsive, the strum button works with touch, and everything runs in the browser without apps or plug-ins. Audio starts after your first tap, as required by mobile browsers.
Are my data and searches private?
Fully. The tool is a static page — chord selection, diagrams and audio are all computed locally on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.
What do the chord type symbols mean?
No symbol is a plain major triad, m is minor, 7 is a dominant seventh, m7 a minor seventh, maj7 a major seventh, sus2 and sus4 replace the third with the second or fourth, dim is a diminished triad and aug an augmented triad.
Why does my guitar sound different from the playback?
The synthesis models an ideal string in standard tuning. Slight detuning on a real guitar, string gauge, pick attack or the position of the capo all change the real-world sound — tune up with a tuner and the notes will match.
How to Use Guitar Chords
This chord library shows verified guitar chord diagrams for all 12 roots across major, minor, 7, m7, maj7, sus2, sus4, dim and aug shapes, and plays each chord through string synthesis computed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded — the page works offline once loaded.
- Pick the root note with the left "Root note" dropdown — all twelve notes from C to B are available.
- Pick the chord quality in the "Chord type" dropdown: Major, Minor, 7, m7, maj7, sus2, sus4, dim or aug. The diagram updates instantly.
- Read the diagram: X = mute that string, O = open string, the numbers in the dots are suggested fingers (1 index … 4 pinky), and the 3fr tag tells you the fret where the 5-fret window starts.
- If the chord offers a second position, press the arrow buttons next to the "Fingering 1/2" label to switch between the open and barre shapes.
- Hit the "Strum" button to hear the chord — the strings ring from bass to treble. Tick "Slow strum" first for a slower 60 ms-per-string sweep, then untick it for the normal speed.
Compare both fingerings of a chord by strumming each one — the higher barre shape usually sounds darker and frees your open strings for other notes.
