What is a metronome used for?
A metronome produces a steady click at a set tempo so musicians can practise playing consistently in time. It is essential for developing a stable inner pulse on any instrument.
How accurate is this online metronome?
It uses WebAudio look-ahead scheduling: a timer plans clicks 100 ms ahead and the audio hardware plays them at exact sample times. This keeps the tempo rock-stable, unlike timers that trigger sounds directly.
How do I use tap tempo?
Tap the "Tap tempo" button several times at the pace you feel the music. The tool averages your taps and sets the BPM to match, ideal when you do not know a song's tempo.
What does the subdivision setting do?
It decides how many clicks sound per beat: quarter (one per beat), eighths (two), triplets (three) or sixteenths (four). Practising with subdivisions tightens your rhythmic precision.
What is the accent for?
When accent is on, the first beat of each measure plays a louder, higher click so you always hear where the bar begins — helpful for keeping your place in the music.
Which time signatures are supported?
2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8. The compound signatures (6/8, 9/8, 12/8) group the eighth notes into two, three or four main beats.
Is my data or audio sent anywhere?
No. The metronome generates all sounds locally in your browser with WebAudio. It works fully offline after the page has loaded and nothing is ever uploaded.
Why does the sound stop when I switch tabs?
Browsers throttle background tabs, which would make the timing jittery. The metronome pauses its audio when the tab is hidden and resumes cleanly when you return.
How to Use Metronome
This online metronome generates a rock-steady click entirely in your browser using WebAudio look-ahead scheduling for sample-accurate timing. It supports tap tempo, eight time signatures, subdivisions, accent and three sounds — nothing is uploaded and it works offline.
- Set the tempo with the slider, the −/+ buttons or by typing a value between 30 and 300 BPM.
- Don't know the tempo? Tap "Tap tempo" a few times in the rhythm of the music and the BPM locks in automatically.
- Choose a time signature (2/4 to 12/8) and a subdivision — quarter, eighth, triplets or sixteenths.
- Enable "Accent first beat" to hear a louder click on the downbeat, pick a sound (click, woodblock, drum) and set the volume.
- Press Start to begin; the dots light up on each beat so you can see where you are in the bar.
Practise difficult passages at half speed with eighth-note subdivisions, then raise the BPM in steps of 5 — you'll nail the passage far faster than by repeating it at full speed.
