Sequence Memory Test
Free online sequence memory test: watch the pattern flash tile by tile on a 3×3 grid, repeat it in order and grow one step per round while the flashing speeds up; your best level stays in your browser.
What is the sequence memory test?
It is a Simon-style short-term memory game. A pattern of lights flashes tile by tile on a 3×3 grid and you must reproduce it in exactly the same order. The sequence grows by one step every round until you slip.
How does a round work?
First the tiles light up one after another — that is your cue to watch. Then it is your turn: tap the tiles in the same order. Clearing the round replays the whole sequence from the beginning with one extra step appended.
Does the game get faster?
Yes. Each level shortens the flash duration and the pause between tiles, so at high levels the pattern whips by and you rely increasingly on rhythm and momentum rather than deliberate recall.
What is a good score?
Most people reach levels 5 to 8, which matches the classic 4-to-7 item span of short-term memory. Levels 10 to 12 are strong and beyond 15 is exceptional — a sign of well-trained chunking.
Is my score saved and shared?
Your best level is stored locally in your browser only — nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. Clearing the site data erases the record.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The nine tiles are sized for fingers, taps register instantly and the layout adapts to small screens, so the game feels the same on a phone as on a desktop.
Why does the sequence get so hard so quickly?
Working memory holds only a handful of items at once. Because the sequence replays from the very start each round, one more step means remembering everything again — which is exactly what makes the training effective.
Any tips for higher levels?
Chunk the tiles into shapes and routes — an L, a diagonal, a corner sweep — instead of nine separate squares. Tap along with the rhythm of the flashes, and keep your hand relaxed: hesitation costs more than forgetting.
How to Use Sequence Memory Test
The sequence memory test is a Simon-style game for your short-term memory. The 3×3 grid flashes a pattern tile by tile; you repeat it in the same order. Every round appends one more step to the sequence, replays it from the start and flashes a little faster, until one wrong tile ends the run.
- Press Start — the first sequence is a single random tile.
- Watch closely while the tiles light up one after another.
- When the pattern finishes, repeat it by tapping the tiles in the same order.
- Each cleared round adds one more step and the whole sequence replays faster.
- Pressing a wrong tile flashes red and ends the run; your best level is kept in your browser and shown under Best level.
Do not memorize nine independent tiles — chunk the sequence into shapes and routes: an L, a diagonal, a corner sweep. Tapping along with the rhythm of the flashes also keeps your timing locked in when the pace speeds up.
