Ear Training
Free online ear training for interval recognition. Listen to two piano-style notes and name the interval, from beginner (thirds, fourths, fifths, octave) to all 12 within an octave. Streak stats, instant feedback, works offline.
What is interval ear training and why does it matter?
Interval ear training teaches you to identify the distance between two notes by sound alone. It is the foundation of playing by ear, transcribing music, singing in tune and sight-singing, and it complements any instrument practice.
How does a round work?
Each round has ten questions. Every question plays a random root note between C3 and B3, a short pause, and then the target note. You pick the interval from the answer buttons and get instant feedback; the next question follows automatically.
Which intervals are in each difficulty level?
Beginner drills five essential intervals: minor third, major third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth and perfect octave. Standard covers all twelve intervals within an octave, from minor second up to the octave, including the tritone.
How is the sound produced?
Every note is synthesized in real time with the Web Audio API: a fundamental plus two harmonics with a decaying envelope, giving a piano-like tone. No audio files are downloaded, so the tool works even offline once the page has loaded.
What happens when I answer incorrectly?
Your choice turns red, the correct answer is highlighted in green and labelled, and the correct interval is replayed automatically so you can compare it with what you heard. Then you continue to the next question.
How many times can I replay a question?
You can replay the two-note pair up to three times per question with the replay button, which shows the remaining count. After the answer, the play button lets you listen as often as you like while you study the feedback.
Are my scores saved?
Your best streak, total answers and total correct answers are stored in your browser via localStorage, so they survive page reloads without any account. Clearing site data resets them.
Who should use this tool?
Singers, instrumentalists, music students preparing for aural exams, producers checking melodies by ear and anyone who wants to connect written music with sound. Beginners should start with the beginner pool until thirds and fifths feel automatic.
How to Use Ear Training
This ear trainer builds interval recognition with piano-style synthesized tones, entirely in your browser — nothing is downloaded or uploaded, and it keeps working offline once loaded. Ten questions per round, instant feedback and streak stats stored locally.
- Pick a difficulty: "Beginner — 5 melodic intervals" or "Standard — all 12 within an octave", then press "Start round". Then pick the direction — Ascending, Descending or Random.
- The first question plays automatically: a root note, a short pause, then the target note. The hint line reminds you which is which.
- Click the interval you heard in the answer grid. Correct answers turn green; a wrong pick turns red, shows the right answer and replays the correct pair automatically.
- Need another listen? Use "Replay (3)" before answering — up to three replays per question. After answering, "Play interval" lets you study the pair freely.
- Watch the stats bar for round accuracy, current streak and best streak (saved in your browser). After ten questions, the summary shows your score — start a new round or change difficulty.
Sing the two notes back quietly after each answer. Humming the interval anchors it in your voice and is the fastest way to move from guessing to knowing.
