Virtual Drums
Free online drum kit with 9 playable pads: kick, snare, closed and open hi-hat, crash, ride and three toms. Keyboard and multi-touch control, synthesized drum sounds, volume control, zero install.
Which keys control which drum?
Kick = J, Snare = K, closed Hi-hat = L, open Hi-hat = P, High Tom = U, Mid Tom = I, Floor Tom = O, Crash = H and Ride = N. The right hand plays the core groove on J K L while the left hand reaches fills and cymbals, and every key label is printed on its pad so you never have to memorize.
Where do the drum sounds come from?
Each sound is synthesized live with the WebAudio API: the kick is a sine sweep from 150 to 50 Hz with a fast decay, the snare combines a 200 Hz body with band-passed noise, the hi-hats use an inharmonic cluster of square waves through high-pass filtering, and the cymbals and toms each have their own oscillator and envelope recipe. No audio samples are loaded at all.
Why does the open hi-hat stop when I hit the closed hi-hat?
That is intentional chokes, just like on a real drum kit: pressing the hi-hat pedal silences the ringing open hi-hat. Triggering the closed hi-hat chokes the open one immediately so fast patterns sound tight instead of muddy.
What happens when I hit the same pad very fast?
Each pad has its own voice management: a new hit cleanly retriggers the sound and fades out the previous one within milliseconds, so rapid rolls never pile up into distortion or clipping.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The pads respond to multi-touch, so you can play the kick and the snare at the same time with different fingers, and the 3x3 grid adapts to small screens without scrolling sideways.
Does it work offline and is it private?
Once the page has loaded it works completely offline, and all sound generation happens locally in your browser. Nothing you play is recorded, stored or uploaded anywhere.
Can I record a performance?
The tool focuses on instant playing, so it has no recorder. If you want to capture a groove, screen recording or an audio loopback tool on your device will capture the output while you play.
Is there any delay between pressing a key and hearing the sound?
The sound starts immediately after your browser processes the input. If you notice lag, close other tabs that use audio and, if possible, reduce the buffer size of your audio device in its control panel.
Why is there no hi-hat pedal button?
The two hi-hat pads cover both states: the closed pad plays the tight short sound, and the open pad rings out. Hitting the closed pad while the open one rings chokes it, which reproduces the pedal action musically without an extra control.
How to Use Virtual Drums
This drum kit puts nine synthesized pads — kick, snare, closed and open hi-hat, crash, ride and three toms — in a 3x3 grid you can play with your keyboard or by tapping. Every sound is generated live in your browser with WebAudio, so nothing is uploaded and the page works offline once loaded.
- Find the key printed in the corner of each pad: Kick = J, Snare = K, closed Hi-hat = L, open Hi-hat = P, Toms = U I O (high, mid, floor), Crash = H, Ride = N.
- Tap any pad with the mouse or your finger to hear it — this also unlocks the audio after page load, as browsers require a user gesture.
- Play a groove with your keyboard: rest your right hand on J K L for kick, snare and hi-hat, and use the left hand on U I O for tom fills.
- Hit the closed Hi-hat (L) while the open Hi-hat (P) is ringing to choke it, exactly like pressing the pedal on a real kit.
- Drag the "Volume" slider under the grid to set a comfortable level, then keep practicing — rapid repeats on one pad retrigger cleanly without piling up.
Alternate your right-hand fingers between J and K (kick and snare) the way a drummer alternates foot and stick — it instantly makes simple beats feel groovier.
