Vocal Range Test
Free online vocal range test. Sing low to high and instantly see your lowest and highest notes, your voice type (bass to soprano) and a comparison with famous singers. Nothing is uploaded.
How does the vocal range test work?
After you allow microphone access the tool analyses your voice in real time with the McLeod autocorrelation method, the same family of algorithms used by instrument tuners. Every pitch you hold for at least 200 ms is converted to a note name, and the lowest and highest accepted notes define your range.
Why do only notes sustained for 200 ms count?
Short blips, consonants and background noise produce unstable pitch readings. Requiring a note to be held for 200 ms filters out those false detections so the reported range reflects notes you actually sang.
How should I perform the test for an accurate result?
Warm up first, sit or stand upright, and start from your lowest comfortable note. Hold it for about a second, then glide slowly upward, pausing briefly on each new note, until you reach your highest comfortable note. Avoid shouting — a strained squeak is not your true range.
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. Pitch analysis happens entirely in your browser with the Web Audio API. No audio recording is stored or sent to any server, and the page works even if you go offline after loading.
What do note names like G2–E4 mean?
Letters are note names, the number is the octave, and middle C on a piano is C4. G2–E4 therefore means you can sing from the G in the second octave to the E in the fourth — 17 semitones apart.
How is my voice type determined?
The midpoint of your measured range is compared with the standard classification table: Bass E2–C4, Baritone A2–A4, Tenor C3–G4, Alto G3–E5, Mezzo-soprano A3–A5 and Soprano C4–C6. Where ranges overlap, the closest match wins. Treat the result as a hint, not a verdict — trained teachers also consider timbre and tessitura.
Why does my range differ between attempts?
Range depends on warm-up, hydration, fatigue, posture and even the time of day. Singers typically gain a semitone or two at the top after a proper warm-up, so test under similar conditions when comparing results.
Does it work on phones and in any browser?
Yes. It works in any modern browser that supports microphone capture, on a secure HTTPS connection. On phones the page adapts to small screens; a headset or earbuds help avoid picking up background music.
How to Use Vocal Range Test
This vocal range test measures the notes you actually sing using McLeod autocorrelation pitch detection, entirely in your browser — no audio is ever uploaded. It reports your lowest and highest note, the span in semitones, the closest voice type and a comparison with famous singers.
- Click "Start testing" and allow microphone access when the browser asks. Headphones are recommended so backing music is not picked up.
- Sing or hum your lowest comfortable note and hold it for about a second — the big letter shows the live note and the cents deviation.
- Glide slowly upward, pausing briefly on each new note, until you reach your highest comfortable note. The piano bar highlights your position and marks the span covered so far.
- Keep singing for at least 10 seconds of detected voice, then press "Finish & see results".
- Read your range (for example G2–E4), your voice type from the classification table, and how it compares with famous singers — then use "Test again" to retry after a warm-up.
Never strain for notes: a forced squeak is not your range. Record your best result after a proper warm-up, when the top of your voice is usually a semitone or two higher.
